Mental Sharpness

The mind and body connection is unique and powerful, and keeping a healthy mind should always be part of our daily goals in the same way we aim to keep healthy bodies.
Good diet, exercise, and health check-ups with your doctor all help to keep body and mind healthy and vibrant. However, our minds need an extra boost to keep working at their optimum and thus provide our bodies with the much needed support for every day stressors. How can you make it happen? Below are 10 steps to help you keep your mind sharp every day, every year:

Daily exercise: Exercise is crucial for overall health. Aim to be active at least 20 minutes a day. If your mobility is limited, try to divide your daily physical activity to only a few minutes a few times a day. Move your arms and legs throughout the day to keep blood (energy!) flowing. Always consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Stay curious: Explore new ideas and activities every day; read and watch documentaries about other cultures and other people’s interests. You will be surprised at how much your world will expand.

Learn something new: trying a new skill is a great way to open up the brain and exercise the mind. You might find a brand new passion to keep your heart and mind thriving.

Dream and plan to achieve: No matter your age, always grab something to look forward to. Voice your desire and aim to make it happen and enlist others’ help is needed.

Connect with others: Positive social interactions are key to healthy living. Find like-minded individuals with whom you can share some of your daily activities.

Practice mindfulness: Create a gratefulness journal and log daily at least 5 things for which you are thankful; this will boost your mood and will encourage you to keep finding more venues for happiness.

Forgive and yes, forget! Negative emotions are toxic to our mental and physical health. Don’t allow bad situations to constantly dominate your thoughts and ruin your day. Choose your battles wisely, try to let it go and forget… for your own sake.

Manage your stress effectively: Don’t wait until you feel run down and frustrated to schedule time to re-charge. Make resting time a priority in your life; delegate, and get rid of time demands that no longer serve you positively.

Give back: Generosity fosters happiness, and a happy mood keeps our mind sharp. Volunteer a few hours of your time to a special cause or to someone in need; give away to charity items that you no longer need.

Eat for Health: A balanced and healthy diet will provide your body with energy which in turn will help your mind to stay focused.
